hi .. i am new to the forums...
i want to save money by making my own
laundry detergent but i have lots of questions...
i have a recipe that i would like to use but i would
like to experiment with other soaps as well... bc i
am not sure which will be the best one for me...
1 bar of fels naptha
1 cup washing soda
1/2 cup of borax
1. the zote soap is 14.1 oz and the fels naptha soap
is 5.5 oz; if i use the zote soap do i use the whole bar
or only a 1/3 of it bc of the ounces?
2. if i use ivory soap, same question applies, whole
bar (as many ounces as the zote or the fels naptha?)
3. if you use another bar of soap, does the ounces have to
be the same amt as per any other soap used (to keep the
consistancy of the soap)
4. on some recipes, the washing soda and the borax are
measured out in equal amts, i am not sure why on this recipe
there is more washing soda than there is borax.
since my son's clothes are smelly and dirty (very!), can i either
mix a cup of borax in the recipe (instead of using 1/2 cup) or
would it be better to add a 1/4 or 1/2 of something like
oxyclean?
5. suds! i love suds. and yes, i am one of these people that
think if there are no suds my clothes are not clean...
is there a way to make this recipe have suds? i have read
everywhere that clothes will come out clean no matter what
6. how much shall i use for my machine? i go to the laundromat
and i use the super large machines. i am not sure which type it is
(again, sorry but i am a bit confused) but i will let you know that
the door on the machine where you load the clothes is in front of me,
not on top of the machines (like the white kenmore) ... and it has a
glass window and a lever to close the door (not a lid).
i use the really large machines at the laundromat. but i am not
sure how much to use.
7. what is glycerin used for? i have seen this on lots of different
recipes for the homemade laundry detergent. is this what makes
the suds?
8. in the rinse cycle, would it be best to add a cup of vinegar?
i know it wont hurt my clothes bc vinegar is great to use for
just about everything. and i know the washing machines would
benefit from this too... it will keep the lines cleaned too.
(for my clogged drains, i use vinegar and baking soda, and it
works fantastic!).
9. i went to walmart today and i couldnt find washing soda
but i did read that i can go to a pool supply place and get
this, but is it called another name if i do this? i dont want
to look silly or odd if i go to a pool supply place and ask for
a box of washing soda.
10. what is the difference of borax and oxyclean? is it
basically the same thing?
as you can see, i need all of the help i can get.
if anyone can help me, i would greatly appreciate it...
i found this site by chance... just in case anyone would like
to know...
thanks in advance
