Re: Four Main Homemade Laundry Detergent Recipes
|
Hi everyone. I am new here and interested in trying out these recipes for homemade laundry soap. Which of the 3 works the best? I am probably going to try recipe #1 as it seems you get more for your money there. Also I have read here that sometimes that recipe #1 comes out runny and mushy. Is there a way to prevent that before I make it?

Re: recipe #1 problems | ||
|
I have been making home-made laundry soap for years. The main advice I have, is to not worry about not being able to find Felths Napths soap. The recipe can be made with ANY SOAP you have on hand. I always save slivers of bar soap from our shower, tub, motels, or used for handwashing. I just grate them along with bar laundry soap if I have it. It works just fine. After the initial mixing in the bucket, I do not stir mine --it sets in a semi-soft lump that I scoop from when I wash. The only difference in the type of soaps used, is the way it sets up -- some set a little firmer than others. But if I decide to use extra soap, it sets up a little firmer too. DO NOT be afraid to make this--you CANNOT mess it up! Use it no matter how it turns out, because it will clean just great.

Re: how does it smell....

i know this is an old post but thought i would reply incase someone else fears this.
It sounds like your mom's soap may have become rancid. I purchased a homemade soap at a festival. It smelled nice. It was wrapped pretty in paper and decorations so I just used it as decor. It started to smell rancid after a few months. I ended up throwing it out. I don't think this detergent will become rancid. It smells nice, but not strong. Your clothes just smell clean. |

using Ivory bar soap in place of Fels Naptha...
|
Hi! Just wondering... could you use Dove (unscented) bar soap, instead of the Fels Naptha or the Ivory soap? We have sensitive skin, too, and son has eczema (very dry skin). We've used Dove (unscented) for years, with no problems. Just wondering if it would work in this case. Thanks!

Go ahead and use the Dove. And save all those little slivers to use also -- they'll save you some money and allow you to use something up. I've found that it works really well to let the clothes soak in the washer before running through the full wash cycle. It helps remove some stains and makes my clothing brighter.

Re: glycerine | ||

Hi guys, I just made a batch of laundry soap it's smooth and smells great. My question is...what is the purpose for the glycerin in one of the other recipes. There isn't an explaination in the recipe. Thanks, Michelle

Hello! I would like to try the powder detergent recipe using the Ivory soap, Borax, and washing soda. Does this dissolve in cold water?
I do not use hot water as I am trying to save money! Any suggestions you could give or perhaps another powder recipe would be greatly appreciated! Jelly Beans 40 |

Homemade Laundry Detergent
|
I have been using this laundry detergent for several months now. I've used Fels Naptha, 1-2-3 (a laundry soap I found in a Mexican grocery), and Zote. I haven't noticed a huge difference so I think I'll go with whatever's cheapest. However, I now have an obsession whereby I look in every store I visit to see if they have a laundry soap I haven't used yet and now have LOTS of bars of soap! I use 1 1/2 cups of the "goo" for an extra large load and add a scoopful of OxyClean-type stuff (found at the dollar store) for extra dirty or icky clothes. I haven't noticed any residue, but if you're worried about that, throw in a 1/2 to 1 cup vinegar with the final rinse water. That will cut any soap left in the clothes. I DO miss having a little fragrance, even though my daughters and I have sensitive skin (one with hand eczema). I have ordered some tea tree oil and some lavender essential oil from ebay and will add 10-15 drops to the recipe just to see if I notice a slight fragrance. Also, there are NO suds. That takes a little getting used to but the results are the same.
Each of my batches have a slightly different texture for some reason. I assume it's the soap I'm using. It makes no difference. Just stir it up so that if it separates, you're not just using water. If you want to put it into old laundry detergent bottles, just put a huge glop of it into the microwave and warm it up a little. That will make it a liquid again. Leave enough room in the detergent bottle so that you can shake it before using (and you WILL need to shake it or it won't come out of the bottle!) If I am doing a LOT of laundry in a day, I just put a glop in a quart glass measuring cup, heat it up and pour it from the measuring cup. Oh yeah........the recipe I've been using is: 1 quart hot water 1/2 bar of Fels Naptha, or 1/3 bar (4 oz.) Zote, or 1-2-3 2 3/4 gallons hot water 1 cup washing soda 1 cup borax 4-5 gallon bucket Again, I use a glass measuring cup for the 1 quart of water so that I can microwave it. I grate the soap and add it to the water in the measuring cup. I then microwave it for a couple of minutes and stir to make sure the soap is disolved. If not, back in the microwave! While that's in the microwave, I put the 11 quarts of hot water in the bucket and add the washing soda and borax. Stir this until it's disolved. When the soap mixture is finished, add it to the bucket. I use a strainer so that I don't get chunks, just in case. Stir it all up and wait. First it will have a texture of heavy cream and then, when you're not looking (a watched pot never boils, right?), it will turn into a gelatinous goo! It's a FUN goo, though (which is why a lot of men like to make it!) Sometimes the goo is thicker than others but that's OK. If you don't like the goo, heat it before you use it. If any of you have used essential oils in your recipe, please let me know. I've never used them before so I don't know how much to add to the 3 gallons. Cheers, Laurel |

Grating Fels Napth | ||
|
This will be my first attempt and I wondered how finely grated does FN need to be for the dry mix? I used the small grater for about 2/3 of the bar and then
my husband, being helpful, used the large holes for the rest of the bar. Will the larger pieces disolve OK in the wash? Thanks!

Help! I tried recipe #3 with the whole bar and this morning woke up to a bucket full of all liquid. No setting up at all. I followed the steps carefully,
except I added a cup of borax as well as the soda to the mix. Did that ruin it? I thought it would be alright since borax is called for in other recipes.
Please help. I am brand new at this. With the whole bucket remaining liquid and not setting up, did I just lose everything I worked hard to achieve?
Thanks, Cuddlebug |

cuddlebug,
I answered your question in the intro, where you first posted it. No, all isn't ruined. Just use it like it is; it will clean just fine. |

Mine does not work....at all.
|
I have made two buckets of laundry soap. Shirts smell like BO. Towels never smell fresh. Stains go in and come out the same way. What am I doing wrong?
Nothing smells clean. Not even fresh. Smells like dirty clothes. I use Fels-Naptha (whole bar) A & H SWS, and Borax.
