Just found this recipe for healthy dog and cat treats:
Pet Treat Recipe
2 1/2 C whole wheat flour
1/2 C non dairy dry milk powder
1 t salt
1 t brown sugar
1 egg
1/2 C cold water
6 T butter or margarine
1. In a medium mixing bowl, combine dry ingredients. Cut butter into dry ingredients with a pastry blender until it resembles coarse crumbs.
2. Mix together the egg and the cold water. Stir into the dry mixture to make a dough ball. Sprinkle with small amounts of flour or water as needed to make dough ball consistency
soft enough to be kneaded. Knead for about 3 minutes.
3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Roll dough into 1/2" thick sheet. Cut into pet friendly shapes with cookie cutters or a sharp knife. Or roll dough into a long, thin roll, and cut into 1/2" thick kibble sized treats, either round or triangular.
4. Bake for about 30 minutes, or until brown and crunchy (depends on the size of the biscuits)
Options:
Substitute 1/2 C cornmeal or soy flour for 1/2 C of the wheat flour.
Add 3 T bouillon or dried soup mix to dry mixture. Decrease salt to 1/2 t.
Substitute a blend of non-gluten flours (sorghum, soy, corn) or meal (corn or flax) for pets with wheat allergies.
Non-wheat and non-gluten flours found in the supermarket baking or cereal aisle.
