I tried this detergent recipe (1 cup borax & 1 cup baking soda) and my dishes do not come out clean. I am up to using 3 tablespoons and do know if it would be feasible to use any more. My machine is not old, so that is not the problem. Does any one have any suggestions or a different recipe?
I love the laundry detergent and have been using it for about 3 years. I would love to be able to make my own dishwasher detergent too. |

yeah it didn't work for me either. i used it for a few weeks, then i started getting a brown greasy film left over on all my dishes. thinking my dishwasher was plugged up, i cleaned it completely and ran bleach thru it several times. still had greasy build up. changed back to a store bought detergent and haven't had problems since.

Well, I am not giving up. I found a bottle of Jet-Dry and added it to my machine. I will let you know in a few days if I think it is working. There has got to be away to make your own. I hate the expense of having to buy it.

Automatic Dishwasher Soap - Uses Castile Soap | ||

Automatic Dishwasher Soap - Uses Castile Soap
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1/2 cup liquid Castile soap 1/2 cup water 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice 3 drops tea tree extract (or oil) 1/4 cup white vinegar Store in squeeze bottle. Use 2 tablespoons per wash in a standard size dishwasher. Do not substitute conventional liquid soap for the Castile unless it is a 'low sudsing' soap. Regular soaps will produce too many suds and overflow the dishwasher. |

Thanks, I will try that. I am not sure where I can buy the Castile soap locally, but will be on the lookout for it. I am sure I can get it online if I need to.
By the way, two loads have come out clean, since I added the rinse agent. I have really made a point to rinse everything before added it to the machine. The verdict is still out though. |

I have not tried the recipe I posted above. I have not been able to find the castile soap locally. I am planing on trying my hand at making some homemade castile soap for different recipes that I have found. It will have to wait until after school starts though. I don't want to do it with my two little girls around.
I have used my homemade laundry soap in a pinch for dishwasher soap before. It worked good too. The batch that I used was one of the liquid recipes that I got off of this site. Good luck, Carmen |

I knew that Castile soap rang a bell. My husband and I tried soap making several years ago and I think there was a recipe in there for castile soap. We were not real happy with our soap. Maybe we should have tried some other recipes.
Have you done an internet search for this soap? It is on my list of things to do. So far the other dishwasher detergent is doing ok, since I added the Jet-Dry to my machine, but I would like to try this other. |

I have tried the liquid recipe found here....the one with the castile soap and so far it's not too bad. I am finding a slight film left on the dishes and silverware and am experimenting with using less. I am down to one tbsp. per load and it's helped though there is still a film. I plan to try using more vinegar in the next batch to see if that may help rinse off the residue. If anyone has any expereince with this recipe I would love to hear from you.
Also for the ladies that are trying to find liquid castile your local health food store and/or the health food section in your supermarket should have it. It's a common item. As for making your own.......good luck. Being a soap maker for years now I can tell you that making this from scratch is a long and tedious process. Just a fair warning here! |

You should be able to find this soap at most herbal shops or health food stores. I know that Hy-wee even carries it if you look in the health/bio friendly area, not the reagular soap area. (although it MAY be different in yours) Anyhow, it's best to usually get it from a health food store, because you can by it in any amount and get a free container with it, depending on the store. It can cost around $7.00 per bottle, but if you keep an eye open you can find it on sale, or get some breaks. It does last along time as well, unless you're like me and make your items for friends, family, and to sell to help make the world healthier

I started adding a cup of the cheapest store brand automatic dish soap I could buy to my cup of borax and baking soda, and I am very please with the results. I have been doing this for several months and have had no problems.

dishwasher soap and rinse aid | ||

I have been using the baking soda and borax combination for a few months and I love it.... I also do not buy Jet Dry, but use plain white vinegar as my rinse aid. The dishes come out very clean and sparkly, and I'm saving money at the same time

Homemade automatic dishasher detergent | ||

My friend just gave me the recipe for homemade automatic dishwasher detergent. It's very similar to what is already posted with two exceptions. So here
is her recipe: 2 C Borax, 2 C baking soda, 4 little pkgs lemonade flavor Kool-aid. Combine dry ingredients in an airtight container. First, she pours a small
amount of liquid bleach in detergent cup in dishwasher then adds a scoop of the homemade detergent to it. It will fizz a little. Shut door and run machine as
usual. I think the difference is the kool-aid and bleach. I've always heard you can clean your dishwasher with a packet of lemonade kool-aid. The bleach
is great for sanitizing and removing stains.

I have tried both the baking soda/Borax recipe and also one that used washing soda instead of the baking soda. Both were AWFUL (even with jet-dry)! I don't
know if I did something wrong or what. My dishes came out with a thick, chalky, white film on them. I tried a vinegar rinse & just a water rinse & it
won't come off. Any advice? I am pretty frustrated. I might try the castille recipe. Do you still save money with that even after you buy all the expensive
ingredients? This was my first experience with homemade soap/detergent & I'm not sure I want to try the laundry soap, now...

ME TOO | ||
We have had the same problem with the recipe using washing soda, so today we have switched to baking soda to see if that works. We have not made the laundry soap yet, my wife is not sold on it at this point, especially since the dishwashing soap isn't working out so well. This was our first experience too. |

I gave up on the dishwasher soap after that huge mess (I tried washing & baking soda) but I went ahead & tried the laundry soap & I actually love
it. Other than on my husband's REALLY grubby clothes (mechanic) it seems to work just as well as anything else & it's a LOT cheaper. I just used
the washing soda, borax & fels naptha recipe. I didn't mix with water. I just use it powdered. If you find a dishwasher recipe that works, let me
know!
